About Wiliame

Wiliame Gucake is Fijian/Samoan and grew up in Fiji before moving to Aotearoa. He is currently the Registrar of the Waitangi Tribunal, where he acts as lead legal advisor to the Tribunal. He previously worked at a large firm mainly acting for the Crown in public law litigation and Crown prosecution. Wiliame was also part of the research team for the Borrin funded ‘Improving Pasifika Legal Education in Aotearoa Project’ and co authored the Project’s Fofola Na Ibe Report. He has published journal articles on Pacific constitutional issues. He studied a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce at Te Herenga Waka, Victoria University. While at University he served as President of the Pasifika Law Student’s Society and continues this work in the profession as an executive member of the Pacific Lawyers Association.

 

What Wiliame is studying

Wiliame’s scholarship will be used to support his studies towards an LLM at Harvard Law School on indigenous rights and constitutional law. His research focus is on how transitional justice mechanisms can be used or improved to facilitate transformational constitutional change for indigenous peoples in Aotearoa and the Pacific.
