Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa’s 2021 hui-ā-tau: Māori Lawyers as Agents of Mana-Based Change

Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa hosts an annual hui-ā-tau. The theme for the 2021 hui-ā-tau is Māori Lawyers as Agents of Mana-Based Change. The conference will explore how lawyers can contribute to social justice by pursuing change grounded in mana and tino rangatiratanga.

About the hui-ā-tau

Each year, Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa hosts an annual hui-ā-tau (conference). The theme for the 2021 hui-ā-tau is Māori Lawyers as Agents of Mana-Based Change.

Kaore te totara e tū mokemoke.

The totara does not grow in isolation.

Ma e tumanako ana koe ki te mōhio i te matau o te tangata, whaia te maramatanga o tōna ao.

If you wish to understand a person, know the world in which they live.

The theme for the hui-ā-tau was gifted by Moana Jackson. The above whakatauki appear in his ground-breaking report on Māori and the criminal justice system, He Whaipaanga Hou. These whakatauki and the conference theme draw attention to the fact that neither people nor law can be isolated from the broader social and political context and a wider network of relationships, encouraging us to think deeply about how lawyers can contribute to social justice by pursuing change grounded in mana and tino rangatiratanga.

All members of the Aotearoa legal community, Māori and non-Māori, are welcome to attend.

The 2021 hui-ā-tau will take place 1-3 July 2021 in Ōtautahi│Christchurch.

Grant amount

$40,000 in 2021
