Hui-ā-Tau 2024

Hui-ā-Tau 2024 was the annual conference of Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa, bringing together Māori legal professionals and students to engage in kōrero, professional development, and celebration of Māori legal excellence.

About the project

Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa, the Māori Law Society, brought its members together at its Hui-ā-Tau in Whakatāne from 5 to 8 September 2024.

The 2024 conference, supported by the Michael & Suzanne Borrin Foundation, was an opportunity for the Hunga to reflect on the theme gifted by Tā Hirini Moko Mead.  It is an extract from a waiata tohutohu (song of advice) composed be Te Kooti Arikirangi in 1884 where he warned of encroaching authority and the loss of land:

“Ko te mana tuatahi ko te Tiriti o Waitangi
Ko te mana tuarua ko te Kooti Whenua
Ko te mana tuatoru ko te Mana Motuhake …
He kino anō rā ka āta kitea iho
Ngā mana Māori ka mahue kei muri!”

The first mana is the Treaty of Waitangi
The second mana is the Land Court

The third mana is the Separate Mana …

It would indeed be an evil thing

To abandon the mana of the Māori!

Over the course of 4 days, over 300 judges, lawyers, and students came together to wānanga and hui over a range of topics and heard from over 50 inspiring speakers. The programme featured over 10 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), alongside keynote speakers, breakout sessions, student competitions, and the Te Matatūre kapahaka evening. Discussions spanned a wide range of legal issues and provided space for professional growth, cultural grounding, and Whakawhanaungatanga.
