‘Tikanga and the State’ collected papers by Tā E. Taihākurei Durie
‘Tikanga and the State’ – an edited collection of papers by Tā E. Taihākurei Durie, former Chief Judge of the Māori Land Court and Chair of the Waitangi Tribunal. To be published by University of Auckland Press.
About the project
The papers are drawn from multiple sources including selections from Waitangi Tribunal reports, presentations at conferences, speeches, evidence for Waitangi Tribunal inquiries, papers written for the New Zealand Māori Council and across fields of resource reform, justice, Oranga Tamariki. The papers are selected for their thought leadership on custom law, tikanga, Māori self-governance, proprietary interests, mana and other themes. Tā Taihākurei offers pathways yet to be fully explored through the pain and the promise of the encounter between customary and western law and governance.
