How To Talk About Crime And Justice: A Guide

Publication date: November 2020

Authors: Written by Marianne Elliott and Dr Jess Berentson-Shaw of The Workshop in collaboration with JustSpeak

The guide draws on two years of primary research by The Workshop and JustSpeak and evidence-led communications theory to provide practical guidance and resources for people who communicate about justice. The research provides new insights into communication strategies that aim to:

  • improve the New Zealand public’s understanding of the causes of crime;
  • improve understanding of the effectiveness of various policy responses to crime;
  • influence attitudes about punishment, rehabilitation and forgiveness;
  • and increase support for evidence-based policy and legal responses to crime.

The recommendations are designed for technical experts, communicators and advocates working to deliver justice reform solutions that will improve wellbeing for people and communities in Aotearoa New Zealand.
